JKL Lady Dolphins will be chasing an eighth consecutive victory when they face KIU Rangers on Wednesday in the National Basketball League at YMCA Court, Wandegeya.
The defending champions head into the contest in dominant form, having won seven straight games since their season-opening loss to KCCA Leopards.
Their most recent outing underlined their strength, as they cruised to a commanding 74-44 win over newcomers Pearl Queens despite having just one player available on the bench.
JKL’s squad continues to be stretched, with Brenda Ekone still recovering from injuries sustained in a recent attack by thugs, while Evelyn Nakiyingi is reportedly out of the country. Shadiah Nassanga is also unavailable due to netball commitments.
In their latest victory, Ritah Imanishimwe delivered a standout performance, scoring a game-high 29 points, including six three-pointers. Tamasha Nsubuga also impressed with 24 points, further cementing her growing influence within the team.
The Dolphins made a fast start in that game, racing to a 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter—an approach they will look to replicate against KIU.
In previous seasons, this fixture would have been one of the marquee matchups on the calendar. However, KIU Rangers have struggled to maintain their past standards following the departure of several key players.
Sharon Kirabo remains their standout performer, averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds per game this season. However, she was limited to just five points in their most recent outing, a 72-51 loss to KCCA Leopards, marking the team’s sixth defeat in ten games.
Anena Cinderella Charity and Ines Kanyamuneza contributed 13 and 10 points respectively in that game, but their efforts were not enough to prevent another setback.
KIU head coach Julius Lutwama now faces a stern test as he looks to rally his side. He will rely on the experience of Kirabo, Kanyamuneza, Stella Nanfuka and Florence Nanyonga as the Rangers aim to pull off an upset against a high-flying JKL side.
