Retired Supreme Court Retired Justice Augustine Nshimye who has died

Kampala, Uganda | URN | Retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Nshimye has died nine years after his retirement from the Judiciary, Uganda Radio Network has learnt.

The death was confirmed on Friday by Judiciary Public Relations Officer James Ereemye Mawanda in a message to URN.

He said the retired judge passed on at his home along Mawanda Road in Kampala this morning.  He said that burial arrangements and any other steps being taken by the Judiciary will be communicated as soon as Possible.

A message also from one Social media group for the Judicial officers also shows Mawanda relaying a message about the Judge’s death from High Court Justice Allan Nshimye of Mbarara, who is the deceased’s son.

According to the message, the body has been transferred to Uganda Funeral Services, where it is being kept as the family prepares and communicates further burial arrangements.

We are notified of the passing on of Hon. Justice Augustine Nshimye this morning at his home in Kampala. The body is now at Uganda Funeral Services, awaiting further guidance as it shall be advised. Let us keep the family in prayer,” the announcement read.

Justice Nshimye was a distinguished jurist whose career in Uganda’s legal and political landscape spanned decades.

He began his professional journey in 1967 as a senior clerk and rose through the ranks to serve as deputy chief registrar between 1986 and 1988 before reverting to entering private legal practice.

In 2008, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal, which also doubles as the Constitutional Court.

He later served as an acting Justice of the Supreme Court in 2010 before his substantive appointment to the Supreme Court in September 2015.

Beyond the judiciary, Nshimye had a notable political career. He served as Member of Parliament for Mityana South constituency from 1988 to 2008.

He also served as  Minister for Regional Cooperation under President Yoweri Museveni. He was also among the founding members of the ruling party.

In 2015, he took on additional responsibilities as Inspector of Courts and further contributed to judicial oversight and administration.

Colleagues and members of the legal fraternity have begun expressing condolences on social media platforms, remembering him as a dedicated public servant who contributed significantly to Uganda’s judiciary and governance.
