Entebbe, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | Joseph Cwinya-ai got off to a flying start in the Pearl of Africa Golf Tour amateur competition today, but focus will quickly turn to the main event Thursday, where three winners from last season are back for more.

Cwinya-ai’s 3-under 68 has set the pace on day one of the POA amateur category, with Marhat Babirye playing par for the course being another highlight.

Soon after the amateurs tee off for their day two on Thursday, the professionals will join the action. Three winners of last year’s inaugural Pearl of Africa Golf Tour will all be vying for the grand prize for Season 2.

Marvin Kibirige, winner of last year’s opening leg at the Uganda Golf Club, is back from playing on the Professional Tour of India. He is the first Ugandan professional golfer to play on the Indian tour.

MTN-sponsored Ronald Rugumayo is back from South Africa, where he has been playing on the Sunshine Big Easy tour. He was the winner of the third leg at the Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club.

Entebbe Club’s Hermam “Deco” Mutebi, winner of Leg 2, will use course advantage on what is his home turf as he seeks to do a double this year.

The professional golfers will play 54 holes over 3 days with a cut after two rounds of action.
Exim Bank, are the main sponsors of the tournament, with other partners being Vivo Energy, Uganda Golf Union, MTN Uganda, Bliss Homes, Aquafina and Case Medical Services.
