Kenya finally fullfils AFCON 2027 Financial obligation to CAF

The Government of the Republic of Kenya has at last fulfilled its financial obligation to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in regard to the hosting of AFCON 2027.

It should be noted that each of the AFCON 2027 hosts, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, was supposed to pay a hosting fee of $30M. Whereas Uganda and Tanzania had fulfilled their payment, Kenya had not yet, and CAF had set 30 March as the deadline.

Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has confirmed the development, expressing the country’s readiness.

‪“I’m now pleased to announce that the Government of Kenya has fully met the financial obligation to CAF of the hosting fee, and now we embark on other aspects of the preparations,” he said.

The confirmation ends days of uncertainty in the East African Nations as far as hosting the tournament is concerned.

The three nations are still engulfed in the task of making sure the prerequisite steps for infrastructure are met.

CAF inspection report of February cited gaps that must be worked upon in areas of stadia, training pitches, roads, airports, hospitals and other amenities.

On Sunday, CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed that AFCON 2027 will go on as earlier planned. He also promised to make a visit to Kenya in May.

The CAF inspection team is expected to return to the three host nations in August for further assessment.
