Uganda’s Butabika hospital has no forensic psychiatry ward

Share

The Executive Director of Butabika National Referral Hospital Juliet Nakku has revealed that Uganda does not have a secure forensic psychiatry ward.

Nakku made the revelation while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Health.

Her appearance before the committee followed the killing of four toddlers at a day care centre in Ggaba last week.

The Butabika national referral hospital boss called for urgent recruitment of forensic psychiatrists to handle complex criminal cases involving mental illness.

Experts say such specialists are critical to assess suspects’ mental state, guide courts on criminal responsibility and ensure safe treatment of high-risk patients instead of unsafe detention in prisons or general wards.
