Buganda’s Leadership Problem: Ssegona says Everyone Thinks They Are Brilliant

Outgoing Busiro East parliamentarian Hon. Medard Lubega Ssegona has called on the Baganda community to rethink its approach to leadership, arguing that the repeated rise and fall of leaders is hurting Buganda’s long-term stability.
Speaking in a reflective tone, Ssegona said one of Buganda’s key challenges is the belief that “everyone thinks they are brilliant,” a mindset he believes has led to constant leadership changes rather than continuity built on experience.
“We need to borrow a leaf from other tribes that treasure experience in leaders,” Ssegona said, adding that he had previously shared the same concerns with the Katikkiro of Buganda.
He questioned how long Buganda will continue what he described as a cycle of “building and unbuilding its leaders,” warning that such practices weaken institutions and divide society.
Ssegona also addressed his loss in the Busiro East parliamentary race, stating that he holds no bitterness over the outcome. “I have no hard feelings because I lost the Busiro East race. It is our very own people who choose how they choose,” he said.
Emphasizing his vision of leadership, Ssegona argued that true leadership should be rooted in unity rather than division. “In my view, a good leader is one who unites and brings people together, not one who fragments society,” he said.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions within Buganda about leadership succession, governance, and the need for cohesion in addressing the region’s social and political challenges.
