Uganda’s Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, has revealed that the government is moving closer to acquiring new technology aimed at regulating social media platforms across the country.
According to Baryomunsi, the planned system will help authorities track and block harmful online content as part of wider efforts to tackle misinformation and promote responsible digital communication.

Speaking during the National Strategic Communications Committee (NSCC) stakeholders’ meeting in Kampala, the Minister said the initiative is intended to close communication gaps and strengthen accountability in Uganda’s digital space.
He explained that government is also in the final stages of introducing a new national communication regulatory policy designed to harmonise public messaging and improve coordination across institutions.
We have already tabled the new policy for review before Cabinet, and they have highlighted their comments. It is now in its final stages.
He added that the legal framework to manage digital conduct is already in place through the Computer Misuse Act, under which several individuals have been held accountable for online-related offences.
The proposed technology, once procured, is expected to complement existing laws and policies, reinforcing government oversight over digital platforms while addressing concerns around misinformation and online abuse.
