Kira Municipality Member of Parliament Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has claimed that President Yoweri Museveni is already positioning himself for the 2031 general elections, warning that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) will continue weakening the Opposition unless it presents a united front.
Speaking during a weekly media talk show, Ssemujju said President Museveni shows no signs of stepping away from power. “As long as Museveni can walk, expect him on the ballot,” Ssemujju said, describing the President as deeply obsessed with leadership.
He argued that Museveni’s priority remains crippling the Opposition to ensure continued dominance of the political landscape.
According to Ssemujju, internal divisions among opposition parties have consistently played into the hands of the NRM government.
“We make life easy for the NRM government every time we focus on fighting each other,” he said, adding that failure to unite could cost the Opposition everything.
Ssemujju also criticized some opposition politicians for previously underestimating the challenges of contesting elections under the current political environment.
He said some members once treated politics as “merrymaking,” only to later realize that winning an election does not always guarantee being declared the victor.
“You can win an election and still not get declared,” Ssemujju noted.
He further said that recent experiences should prompt reflection and accountability within opposition ranks, calling on some politicians to apologize to veteran opposition figure Dr. Kiiza Besigye for dismissing his long-held warnings about electoral manipulation.
Ssemujju’s remarks come amid renewed debate about the future of Uganda’s Opposition and growing concerns over electoral reforms, political freedoms, and preparations for upcoming elections.
