As demand for biomass energy, construction materials, and timber exports continues to rise, scientists at the National Forestry Resources Research Institute (NAFORRI) are urging the adoption of alternatives, including special-purpose trees, to protect indigenous species that are rapidly disappearing due to their economic value. Among the proposed options are bamboo and fruit trees. The call comes at a time when Uganda is losing an estimated 200,000 hectares of forest cover annually, a trend that scientists warn is exacerbating climate risks.
